CrossFit 101: Talk the Talk


Talk the Talk

When someone tells you that the reason they do CrossFit is because of the girls, it’s not exactly the strong and beautiful women in the gym they are talking about.

So before you pack your CrossFit gear and head to the gym to see the girls, take a few moments to learn how to talk the talk, to make it easier for you to walk the walk.

Box: A box is the gym or area where you train. There are no two boxes alike. Aside from having different facilities, what makes every box different is the coach that runs it. Every coach has his own sets of fitness philosophies, which is what gives each box a unique personality.

For this reason, it’s recommended that you visit at least three different boxes before committing yourself to one. Most offer free trials so that prospective members can learn more about the coach and what they’re getting into firsthand.

WOD: Workout of the Day. Workouts in CrossFit are never the same, hence, of the day. This is because CrossFit aims to give every area of your body a maximum workout. You can be training in combinations of strength, flexibility, or mobility or simply focused on one aspect. The exercises in each category can also differ, depending on the WOD.

The Girls: The most brutal WODs. To quote Greg Glassman, founder of CrossFit, “Any workout that leaves you flat on your back, staring up at the sky, wondering what the hell happened deserves a girl’s name.”

Case in point, Fran. This lovely girl is composed of 21 thrusters and 21 pull-ups, then by 15 thrusters and 15 pull-ups, and until you feel like puking your guts out, which in CrossFit translates to under three minutes.

Heroes: WODs named after fallen soldiers, law enforcement offices, Firemen, Marine, etc. Because CrossFit has been a growing part in training these brave men and women, Heroes are a tribute to their service for the country.

AMRAP: Acronym for ‘As Many Rounds (or reps) As Possible’. Oftentimes used in WODs.

Firebreather: The toughest sons of their mothers you would ever see in the box. Those that have the kind of crazy that gets them through the most brutal of the girls. They can be your inspiration or your worst enemy during CrossFit Games.

For Time: Probably something your coach may say if he woke up on the wrong side of the bed that day and you happened to walk into the box. For time means going through the WOD as fast as you can.

Rx’d: Means a workout is prescribed and should be completed exactly as written.

Pukie the Clown and Uncle Rhabdo: The verdict is still out on these two unofficial and very controversial mascots of CrossFit.
