Using Ropes for Fitness Training

If you keep up with the current info in strength and exercise training, you have most likely observed a lot of discussion about battling ropes. The Battling Ropes method is a unique version of the old idea of rope exercising.  Training ropes have always been a standard in physical fitness tests and PE courses for a long time. So what is the new fascination with training with heavy ropes and all these rope exercises?

Ropes are a great tool for training for strength and cardio fitness. This fitness routine will give your entire body a workout even though it is low impact and able to be performed anywhere. Due to the rising popularity of ropes people have a lot of questions on the type of rope, the thickness of rope and the length of the rope to use.

Length of the rope – 50 feet is the standard length used for battling ropes. A 50′ rope wrapped around a post will provide you with a working length of 25′ per hand. While skilled users may want a rope as long as 100′ newcomers may use lengths much shorter. When being used in classes where you have two people using the same rope, in other words one person at each end, you may want to consider purchasing 30′ or 40′ ropes which will again give you a similar experience as using the 50′ doubled up. If you want to shorten a 50′  put a knot in it near the center and that should shorten its length easily. Anyone from kids to advanced users can use the rope now that it is shorter.

Rope Diameter – 1.5″ is the standard for most uses and most users. This size rope presents the most versatility and can be used by nearly anyone. While beginners can use it, even the grip of trained athletes will be challenged at this thickness.  Of course if you are looking to really push your grip strength or your goals are strongman like strength then we would suggest going up to a 2″ rope diameter. If you can tame it, the resulting strength increases will be great, but this size of rope is not for the average user.

Types of Rope – Type of rope is probably the most challenging question. It used to be that a rope was a rope was a rope, but today their are many options available and it can be confusing. Manila, nylon, and poly are the three main choices. Now we’ll look at the pros and cons of each type of rope.

Poly: With all the other choices you have, this is the one you cannot go wrong with. Poly ropes have a smooth texture and do not shed. Poly ropes boast the best longevity and are ideal for use either indoors or out. Poly rope is moisture resistant and buoyant.  You can use them at the pool or at the beach, come rain or shine. This rope will never disappoint you or make your garage smell because it is resistant to mold and mildew. Among all ropes, poly rope is the costliest.

Manila – Manila rope is what most people think of when they think of gym or fitness rope. Manila is the cheapest option, and as such, a very popular choice. This rope works perfectly for outdoors because it is so rugged. Manila will have a certain amount of shedding during the break in period because it is a natural fiber rope.  Due to the natural moisture content in the fibers, and its capacity to absorb water, most of these ropes may at first seem greasy to the touch. Drying it in the sun and then taking a dry cloth and vigorously rubbing it over the rope is how we recommend that you cure the rope.  Doing this with the cloth will help to remove many of the loose fibers from the rope preventing a mess later on. While you’re breaking in your new rope, use chalk to absorb the additional moisture. The rope with degrade overtime if left wet. Treat the rope well and it will last you a lifetime.

Nylon rope is a great choice for gyms where women are the predominant clientele. This smooth rope is an excellent mid-price option for people who want to build strength but treat their hands gently. While some people find callouses and torn open hands sexy, many men and women do not wish to rough up their hands and this rope is a better solution. Some people don’t like white nylon rope because it quickly becomes dingy looking.
